The following will help you determine if you need a Regular or Wide Stair Barrier.
Measuring for Banister to Banister:
Measure from the innermost edge of the 1st banister (see arrow marked in Fig. 1) to the innermost edge of the 2nd banister. For staircases measuring 36-42 inches between the banisters, you need a Regular Stair Barrier. For stairs measuring greater than 42 inches, but no wider than 52 inches between the banisters, order a Wide Stair Barrier. If you have volute (curved) banisters where the spindles wrap around the banister, measure from spindle to spindle, as seen in Fig. 2.
Measuring for Wall to Banister:
Measure from the wall to the innermost edge of the banister (see arrow marked in Fig. 1). For staircases measuring 36-43 inches between the wall and banister, you need a Regular Stair Barrier. For stairs measuring greater than 43 inches, but no wider than 52 inches between the wall and banister, order a Wide Stair Barrier. If you have volute (curved) banisters where the spindles wrap around the banister, measure from spindle to wall, as seen in Fig. 2.
What if the width of your stairs are not exactly 42 inches or 52 inches?
If you have extra fabric you can always wrap around banisters and/or spindles. You may also have a gap of 1" or less between the fabric and the spindle. With the many variations in stairs, there is not one process for installation that applies to all homes. With the Stair Barrier you can use the banisters, spindles, multiple spindles and combination of both to install the product. The key is to try multiple options and find the tightest fit that works for your stairs.
What are the options for staircases narrower than 36" or wider than 52"?
The Stair Barrier's custom stair gates are designed to provide an option for staircases narrower than 36" and wider than 52". Custom sizes are made-to-order and available in several fabric options. Custom gates can be made for Wall to Banister and Banister to Banister stair cases and ordered through the website under Custom Width (Made to Order.) Please Note: Custom Stair Barriers may not be returned. After an order for a Custom gate is received, a Customer Support representative will reach out via email within 2 business days to request photos of your stairs straight on, left, and right side close-ups. This step ensures that a Stair Barrier will work on your staircase and that we have an accurate measurement for the tightest possible fit. Once photos have been received we will create a mock-up and ask you for the precise measurements and details via email. Once you provide the measurements we will ask you to confirm all order details one final time before sending to our manufacturer to begin.
Custom orders are put on the production calendar. Custom orders require 3-6 weeks for delivery.
